Meet Jonathan

Hi, I’m Jonathan Van Viegen, an online couples therapist. I specialize in helping people save their relationships and reverse the trend of separation or divorce.

M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy

My Story

I got my start in relationship counselling back in 2012, having spent more than five years trying to figure out how to build a better relationship with my wife.

Teetering close to the edge of my own separation and divorce, I was left with no choice but to learn how repair my marriage – thankfully, I learned quickly.

Now, using my own experience and professional training, I’ve discovered my calling for helping others do the same!

Personal Experiences

When I’m not helping people through my online therapy practice, I blog about my experiences as a husband and father of two darling young girls.

I believe in giving people a behind-the-scenes look into the skills, strategies and tools I personally use to ensure the survival and success of the most important relationship in my life – the one with my wife!

If you can avoid just one relationship pitfall by reading about the lessons I’ve learned, then I’ve done my job.

Academic Background & Credentials

My academic background is in the field of Marriage and Family Therapy.

I hold a Master of Arts Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Northcentral University in Arizona and am a Professional Member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), possessing a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) designation.

I am an active speaker and have hosted workshops for adults and couples in more than half a dozen countries around the world (and am still going strong).

My approach to working with couples is known as solution-focused brief therapy.

I have helped hundreds of couples improve their relationship by doing one simple thing: identify what works in their relationship.

I do this by focusing on solutions, rather than talking about problems.

I believe that big improvements are built on the micro-efforts we make towards our partners every single day.

I also believe that no one should have to be in therapy for years – or even months – and that a good therapist leaves clients with the tools to solve their own challenges in the future.

I am a relationship optimist, and don’t believe we need to look for blame – in either partner. Instead, I encourage couples to consider their own role and responsibility, and ultimately focus on the positive.

My strength as a mentor and couples therapist lies in my belief that all couples have the strength to change and build better relationships – you just have to start looking for the solutions, not the problems.

I use a variety of techniques and activities to help couples start to re-frame their relationship, and pay attention to what is working.

Sometimes, it only takes a few sessions – so what have you got to lose? Why not book a session and see where it takes you. It might just be the best thing you’ve ever done for your relationship.
